The Art of Dale Chihuly

April 26th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Artist, Media Modification, Sculptures

Ikebana Flower - Copyright Dale Chihuly

Dale Chihuly is most frequently lauded for revolutionizing the Studio Glass movement by expanding its original premise of the solitary artist working in a studio environment to encompass the notion of collaborative teams and a division of labor within the creative process. However, Chihuly’s contribution extends well beyond the boundaries both of this movement and even the field of glass: his achievements have influenced contemporary art in general. Chihuly’s practice of using teams has led to the development of complex, multipart sculptures of dramatic beauty that place him in the leadership role of moving blown glass out of the confines of the small, precious object and into the realm of large-scale contemporary sculpture. In fact, Chihuly deserves credit for establishing the blown glass form as an accepted vehicle for installation and environmental art beginning in the late twentieth century and continuing today. Art 290 - Copyright Will Ashford

Browsing through garage sales, street markets and used bookstores I search for interesting, preferably discarded, old books. When I find a good candidate I explore every page. Like an archeologist I hunt for the words that speak to me with new meaning. Intuitively, one word at a time, they turn into a kind of haiku or philosophical poetry that I can call my own. Link

The Art of Chewed Gum

Tulips - Copyright GumArt

It’s been 17 years since I finished my first piece of GumArt, but I can not recall GumArt’s beginning. The “primordial soup” of GumArt exists in my earliest memories. It’s made up of a love for gum, the idea that nothing loved should be thrown away, and, as William Faulkner put it, the desire “…to create out of the materials of the human spirit something which did not exist before”.
