The Art of Michael Mararian

September 27th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Drawing, Media Modification

Portrait of the Artist - Copyright Michael Mararian

Michael Mararian possesses a poetic propensity for taking traditionally cheerful images and concepts and turning them into frightening, yet humorous, tableaus. Focusing on children as the last bastion of innocence, Mararian draws on a diverse range of influences to deliver the peculiar ink work he aptly calls, M. Mararian’s Inky Dreadfuls. In this world our fondest visions of childhood’s naiveté are darkly rearranged to uncover lost innocence and the fear of our modern times. Link

Woolen Heart - Copyright Sara Hillenberger

Defining one category for all the work of Sarah Illenberger is no easy task. The forms the visual translations of her themes assume are far too diverse. What initially sounds quite abstract, in reality, is mostly practical in that her creations are not generated on a computer but rather by meticulous handwork, sometimes incorporating the most mundane materials.

The Art of Elizabeth McGrath

Ready for the Parade Strip XXIII - Copyright Elizabeth McGrath

Influenced by a Roman Catholic upbringing, punk rock, Erte, and Edward Gorey, Hollywood native Elizabeth McGrath is one of her generation’s more unique and prolific artists. She creates in a number of mediums and materials with undeniable artistry and imagination. Her paintings are haunted whispers of color, depicting subtly dangerous creatures that creep towards the edge of the canvas. Her stitched and bandaged dolls and toys are a united army of soft strangeness and her mixed media dioramas are isolated freak shows displaying rotting subhuman figures luxuriously dressed for your pleasure of contempt. The Art of Dale Chihuly

Ikebana Flower - Copyright Dale Chihuly

Dale Chihuly is most frequently lauded for revolutionizing the Studio Glass movement by expanding its original premise of the solitary artist working in a studio environment to encompass the notion of collaborative teams and a division of labor within the creative process. However, Chihuly’s contribution extends well beyond the boundaries both of this movement and even the field of glass: his achievements have influenced contemporary art in general. Chihuly’s practice of using teams has led to the development of complex, multipart sculptures of dramatic beauty that place him in the leadership role of moving blown glass out of the confines of the small, precious object and into the realm of large-scale contemporary sculpture. In fact, Chihuly deserves credit for establishing the blown glass form as an accepted vehicle for installation and environmental art beginning in the late twentieth century and continuing today.
